The Commander was modeled after the ring worn by Tony Soprano. Most people don't realize Tony wears four different pinky rings throughout the show, so at Commendatori we analyzed each one and ultimately chose his final rendition as the model for this piece. Although we analyzed many scenes, two stills were primarily used in our design. The first being a scene from S6E21, "Made in America." This scene occurs right before Tony visits Junior for the last time. He is in his yard raking when he pauses to look up and enjoy nature. While looking out into the woods, he rests his hands on his rake and we get the perfect still image of his pinky ring.
Another still we used to design the ring, and one of our personal favorite episodes, occurred during S6E13, "Soprano Home Movies," as Tony talks to Bobby about their earlier fight. Tony, holding a Budweiser can, points at Bobby and says, "a sucker punch is a sucker punch." Here again we get the perfect still image of Tony's pinky ring.
When referencing these images and designing The Commander, we played close attention to the shape of his ring and also his teardrop shaped diamond and natural red garnet stone — perhaps a metaphor for Tony's constant struggle between good and evil.
